Question: Hard, Harder, and Hardest are brothers. By age from youngest to oldest, it goes Hard, Harder, Hardest. Hard is half the age of Hardest who is 20 which means hard is 10. Harder has a two-year difference between the number of years older he is than Hard and the number of years younger he is than Hardest. Harder is closer to the age of Hard than Hardest. How old is Harder?

Question: You have 3,000 grapes with you. You have to send these grapes to a city which is 1000 km from your farm. These are the rules that you have to follow; ◾Your truck can carry only 1,000 grapes at a time. ◾Every time you travel a kilometer towards the city you have to pay a toll tax of 1 grape. ◾You pay nothing when going in the other direction. (towards your farm) What is highest number of grapes you can get to the city?

Answer: Step one: First you will make 3 trips of 1,000 grapes up to 333 kilometers. You will be left with 2,001 grapes and 667 kilometers to go. Step two: Next you will take 2 trips of 1,000 grapes 500 kilometers. You will be left with 1,000 grapes and 167 kilometers to go (you have to leave a grape behind). Step three: Finally, you travel the last 167 kilometers with one load of 1,000 grapes and are left with 833 grapes in the city.

Question: The London Racetrack needs to submit its 3 fastest horses to the Kentucky Derby out of 25 horses. However, all of their information was lost and they don't know any of the horse's times. Similarly, they all look identical so they can't remember who's fastest.

They can only race 5 horses at once, so what is the fewest number of races they can conduct to find the 3 fastest horses?

Answer: 7 races are required.

First you divide the 25 horses into 5 groups of 5. You conduct the 5 races and take all of the fastest horses in those races and have a race with them, giving you the fastest horse. Then you take the remaining 24 horses (excluding the fastest) and remove the 4th and 5th horses in the first set of 5 races (since they definitely have 3 horses faster than them), leaving you with 14 horses. Next you can remove all of the horses that were beat in the preliminary race by the horses that got 4th and 5th in the championship race, leaving you with 8 horses. Finally, you can remove the horses that remain that lost to the 3rd place horse in the final race in the preliminary race and the horse that got 3rd in the preliminary to the horse that got 2nd in the championship race, leaving you with 5 horses.

You can then run a final race where the 1st and 2nd place horses are the 2nd and 3rd fastest. Then you know the 3 fastest horses.

Question: There are three men and a judge. The judge has 5 hats. Three of them are red and two of them are white. The judge says "Close your eyes, I am going to place a hat on each of your heads, who ever can guess what color hat they are wearing can go free." Facts: 1. The three men are standing in a line facing the judge. Where person three can see person two, one and the judge. Person two can see person one and the judge, person one can see the judge. Person three opens his eyes first, then person two, then person one goes last. 2. Each person can hear the others response. 3. The additional 2 hats are not visible 4. Person one guesses correctly. Question: What color hat is person one wearing and how do you know?

Answer: Person 1 is wearing a red hat. He knows his hat is red because: 1. If person three does not know, it means that when he opened his eyes, he didn't see two white hats in front of him. 2. Person two knows that person three did not see two white hats. The only way he could know what color hat he was wearing is if he opened his eyes and saw a white hat. (which means he saw a red hat) 3. Person one knows he is wearing a red hat because if person three doesn't know, then both him and person two don't have white hats. Person would only know what color his hat was if person one was wearing white. Person one knows all of this and concludes his hat is red.
