Stephen King is a great contemporary writer of novels like "The Shining" and "Pet Cemetery". He has sold millions of copies of his novels and many of them have been adapted into movies. Aside from writing great novels, he also writes a good riddle. Here is one of his riddles from the Dark Tower series:
Not chest or box is now discussed. Money can be held in it, but just as we test its metal, within it there is rust.
The answer to this riddle is trust. This riddle is a part of the riddle competition that takes place in the novels. In these competitions a barrel that has been used to store citizen submitted riddles for a very long time is taken and put in the middle of The Hall of the Grandfathers. All who want to join the competition line up in a pre-selected order and the first person grabs a riddle and gives it to the Riddle Master. The Riddle Master reads it to them and if they can't get it in 3 minutes they are disqualified and it is asked to the next person. The last person standing wins. When Roland meets another group of people who think riddles are silly, he proves to them that they are a serious matter by telling them this riddle:
What's dressed when night falls and undressed when day breaks?
The answer to this riddle is a fire. The man he is talking to, Eddie, thinks riddles are only good for humor and responds with:
Why did the dead baby cross the road?
The answer to this riddle is 'Because it was stapled to the chicken.' They continue with these riddles for a while. For the complete conversation visit the Dark Tower Wikia.
