Question: A freight train is pulling 50 cars. One diesel engine weighs 200 tons. Each car weighs an average of 75 tons when full. There are 3 diesel engines. The train is traveling at 40 MPH. If a train requires 1 mile of stopping distance for every 1,900 tons of weight per every 60 MPH of speed, how much distance does this train need to stop?

Answer: This train needs approximately 1.5 miles to stop. This is calculated by first calculating the total weight. 200 tons x 3 engines + 75 tons average x 50 cars = 3,950 tons. Then we need to divide this by 1,900 ton increments. 4,350 tons / 1,900 ton increments ≈ 2.29. Then need to multiply by the speed ratio. 40 MPH / 60 MPH = 2 / 3. 2.39 x (2 / 3) ≈ 1.5 miles.
